Narrative
SILVER SPRING, MD – A hit-and-run incident in a highway work zone on the D.C. beltway claimed the life of Eric Lewis, 57, of Washington, D.C., on Wednesday morning.
The crash occurred at approximately 10:15 a.m. along the inner loop of Interstate 495 near Georgia Avenue in Montgomery County.
Lewis, a crew member of a mobile tree trimming company, was working on the shoulder of I-495 when he was fatally struck by a vehicle traveling eastbound.
Maryland State Police identified the suspect as the driver of a Freightliner truck hauling a flatbed with a forklift, missing the right front headlight assembly.
The driver fled the scene, and the Maryland State Police Crash Team is leading the ongoing investigation.
The incident blocked two lanes of the highway, causing traffic disruptions during Wednesday morning.
