Narrative
MONTGOMERY CO., MD – A 36-year-old police officer had both his legs amputated following a deliberate hit-and-run on Interstate 270 early Wednesday morning.
Officers had attempted to stop19-year-old Raphael Mayorga, who was speeding at over 110 mph, but he continued to evade them. The situation escalated when he exited and reentered the highway, driving dangerously.
Ultimately, officers deployed stop sticks to halt his car. Mayorga switched lanes and intentionally struck Sgt. Kepp, resulting in life-threatening injuries.
Sgt. Kepp’s life was saved by first responders who applied a tourniquet, He was subsequently airlifted to the hospital, where both of his legs were amputated.
Mayorga was arrested and charged with attempted first-degree murder.
